Earthlink has been going downhill for me and I'm thinking about switching. Does anyone use Comcast cable internet in Hayes Valley, particularly near Oak and Buchanan? How is the speed? Does it slow down significantly in the early evening?
Thanks

Re: Anyone using Comcast cable internet?
Fri, August 3, 2007 - 10:06 AMWow. I haven't been on tribe in a while.
This post may not be relevent to Olivia anymore, but I'll answer it for the benefit of others living here.
I live on Fell and Buchanan. I've had Comcast internet since November 2006 and it is probably the best connection I've ever had, in regards to speed and stability. I find no noticible slow downs at any time of the day or night, and the darn thing seems to never go down.
That being said, I am NOT a fan of Comcast. They charge way too much for basic cable (talk about widening the digital divide). They limit your newsgroup downloads to absurdly small amounts a month. Did I mention they charge way too much for basic cable? When they installed my line, they charged me for things that the installation guy said that I would not be charge for (they corrected the bill when I notified them).
Hope this helps anyone.

Re: Anyone using Comcast cable internet?
Fri, August 3, 2007 - 12:37 PMThat's pretty much been my experience in the last three or four months since I switched from AT&T DSL, which was constantly going down. Download speeds on Comcast are fast, they charge too much for basic cable, and their billing department takes a while to get things right.
One thing to keep in mind if you're a new subscriber, or are just switching up to their cable service, is to try to work a deal with them. They've always got some six-months type deal going on. A helpful customer service rep told me that when the six months is up, call to find out what the latest greatest deal is and try to get them to switch you to that. At least that works for the cable TV part. I recall that for internet they want a one-year contract. But it never hurts to try. Even with the limited choices, there is still some competition for your internet dollar. Earthlink is just downright lame.
And don't hold your breath for the much-touted "free" wifi deal between SF and Google/Earthlink. As planned, it will be painfully slow, won't work inside most buildings, and Google will be tracking your every move. Municipal wifi, like municipal power, is starting to make more and more sense.

Re: Anyone using Comcast cable internet?
Fri, August 3, 2007 - 1:20 PMI live at Fell & Buchanan as well. and have had Comcast cable internet for at least 3 years. it's fast and never any noticeable slow downs at any time. and [knock on wood] only very infrequently goes down.
and i double agree that they way overcharge for basic cable. (all cable companies are monopolies-in-ambition so they all do.)
